Sassafras Natural Resources Management Area

This 1,000 acre state park is a beautiful landscape of vast agricultural fields, old growth forests, stately bluffs above the Sassafras River, and an abundance of wildlife. In partnership with the Sassafras Environmental Education Center the hike is designed for all ages and can be accomodated to meet any handicap need. The hike will start at sunset above the glistening Sassafras River and continue until the sky, an outdoor planetarium, is filled with stars. The chorus of night sounds will captivate your imagination and make you feel like part of the mystery of nature.

WATERFOWL WATCH

Place: Knocks Folly at Turner's Creek Park

Come out and join Walter Ellison and Nancy Martin of the Kent County Bird Club for an exploration of the Turner's Creek area. These creeks and coves shelter a good number of wintering swans, geese, ducks, herons, and eagles. Bring binoculars if you have them and dress warmly.

BALLROOM DANCE

American Style ballroom dancing that is painless exercise and fun. Not just for the more mature adult, this class promises to interest even the youngest adult students. Dances include the Fox Trot, Eastern Swing, Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango, and maybe even a Polka. Bring a group or just a pair. It promises to be fun and exciting.

WALK THE GYM

Walking is a low impact form of exercise. During the cold winter months walking for exercise can be tedious. We have just what you are looking for. Come and get out of the cold to walk our state-of-the-art gymnasium. Stay happy and healthy all winter long.

ART IN NATURE

Arts at Still Pond Station

Cost:

$5 for each additional person

Part art and part exploration, families will create their own sculptures using found objects, scavenged from the beach at the Arts at Still Pond Station. The program will run for five consecutive weeks, with the introductory class being held at the Community Center, where participants will go over the creative concept using examples from internationally acclaimed artist, Andy Goldsworthy.

Come join us on an Autumn Paddle down the peaceful, placid waters of the Sassafras River. Enjoy the vistas of Kent and Cecil counties like you have never seen them before. The Fall foliage, the Canadian Geese, miles of white sandy beaches, wild turkeys, and bald eagles will be seen as if through the eyes of Captain John Smith on his voyage if 1608 and the Tockwogh Indians that lived and thrived along these shores. If you have a canoe or a kayak and a life jacket bring them, along with a friend or family member. A limited number of canoes, kayaks, and life jackets will be provided if you do not have one.

Come join Kent County native and personal trainer, Eric Fitch for a fun filled aquatic cross training class. Aquatic cross training is a low impact class designed to stretch and strengthen all of your body's muscles as well as cardiovascular system. By using foam pool noodles and the natural resistance of water, we can help you build muscles, lose weight, and gain overall body development.

INCLEMENT WEATHER CANCELLATIONS

Weather closing information and general announcements are posted on the Parks and Recreation home page bulletin board at www.KentParksAndRec.org and our Weather Cancellation Hotline at 410-810-3755 (usually no later than 7:30 am the day in question when weather related).  Whenever possible (we will do our best, but can’t guarantee this will always happen), a courtesy email will be sent to individuals who have provided an email address for announcements and notifications. If you do not receive an email and weather is questionable, please visit our website homepage or call the Weather Cancellation Hotline. To be added to our email list please send an email to info@KentParksAndRec.org and request to be added.

Kent County Community Center:  When Kent County Public Schools (KCPS) are closed, close early, or cancel evening programs due to inclement weather, generally, the Community Center will be open to the public on a drop in basis when Kent County Government offices are open, however, the operating schedule may be adjusted as needed as weather conditions warrant or in case of emergencies.

School Year (September—May):  In general, if Kent County Public Schools (KCPS) are closed, close early, or cancel evening programs, all programs at public school sites are closed. Kent County Parks and Recreation (KCPR) youth programs at the Kent County Community Center (KCCC) and KCPR facilities are closed when county facilities remain *open. KCPR adult programs at county facilities will be open when county facilities remain *open. If KCPS are one hour or 90 minutes late, morning programs will be open. If KCPS are two hours late, morning programs will be closed. These general policies do not necessarily apply to programs offered by private vendors (please refer to program description) at the Community Center as they determine their opening and closing schedules when the Community Center remains *open.

*All programs are closed when the Snow Emergency Plan or the State of Emergency Plan is in effect.

Weekend/Summer:  In general, announcements for weekend and/or summer programs and events held at the KCCC or a KCPR facility are posted by 8 am on the day in question.  Decisions for programs with a start time before 8 am will be posted by 10 pm the night before.
